DASTAK Foundation’s Response to Floods in Pakistan (2022)

33 million affected, nearly 1000 killed, 500,000 houses decimated and close to 1 billion livestock dead in Pakistan, via Aljazeera. 8 million menstruating individuals, 650000 pregnant women and 75000 mothers expected to give birth in the coming month, via UNFPA.

Food, water, shelter and medical aid are first priorities in any humanitarian crisis and with good reason, but this often means that the crucial hygiene needs of women and girls are overlooked. This oversight and the absence of basic feminine hygiene products leaves women and girls feeling embarrassed and anxious in times of disaster, conflict and crisis. Menstruation doesn’t stop when disaster strikes; women shouldn’t be forced to put their lives on pause due to period poverty. Similarly, the needs of mothers are also neglected. DASTAK Foundation has partnered up with civil society organizations and hospitals across the country to provide Dignity kits (sanitary pad, underwear and soap) and Ma kits (blanket, clothes, medicine, sheets and other stuff) to girls and women who are impacted by the floods.

Dignity Campaign

Includes Dignity Kits for displaced menstruating individuals, wherein each kit costs PKR 200 and includes supplies (sanitary pads and underwear) to help them manage menstruation with dignity amid the current crisis.

#ForYouMaa Campaign

Includes Maa Kits, where each kit costs PKR 1800 and includes diapers, blankets, clothes, plastic sheet, medicines etc. for new mothers to hygienically manage the pregnancy, administered within medical camps.

We urge all relief and donor organisations to include menstrual and maternity products in their relief packages, help/support them menstruate and give birth with dignity, no matter what. If you need help in putting them together, REACH OUT!! If you want to support us email at info@dastakpk.org. Let’s get through this together. DASTAK Foundation aspires to mainstream this idea that, “menstruation shouldn’t be talked about in hushed tones”. It should be part of everyday conversations, loud and clear. We are grateful to all the people who have donated for this campaign. Please bear in mind that the struggle has just started and we need to keep building the momentum in order to reach individuals impacted by this unprecedented tragedy on a national level.
